Gurung studied at St. Xavier's School in Kathmandu and later moved to India to study at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi.

He gained experience by working for various fashion houses such as Cynthia Rowley and Bill Blass. In 2009, he launched his own label, Prabal Gurung, during New York Fashion Week.
